"The savory food tour"
August, 2016
Going into this tour, I had no idea what to expect. I figured we would get a few morsels of food, and listen to a tour guide run through a script of things to say. However, what we got was way, WAY, more.
First, we get to the meeting spot for the beginning of the tour, check in, and give the receptionist our names(Real or fake) and then we are given complimentary wine and chocolate! Not much of a wine guy, but it was pretty good. Then we waited for the rest of our tour group to get there(one of which was kind of upset about the parking situation, but lets get into that) and once all 8 of us arrived we met Ed and the adventure began.
We set out, heading right down the street towards the Cafe Alcazar, learning a bunch of great and interesting history about the city and buildings from Ed. Once we got to the restaurant, we got to sit at our table instantly and was given some more complimentary wine(I think it was wine, Ed said it was Absinthe or something like that) which was incredible! Then we were given a delicious artisan pizza to sample and to my disgust at first, Escargot. I had never tried it, and never had an intention to try it however after some encouraging I bit the bullet and popped it into my mouth. It was not bad, but it will be something I never try again.
So we set out right across the street to the Old City House Inn and Restaurant for a fantastic looking Goat cheese and Herb grit, with some shrimp in a sauce(sorry, I cannot recall all of what Ed said was in it). I say it looked good because I could not eat it due to a food allergy. Not to be left out, Ed sprang into action and got the chef to whip me up a fantastic cabbage salad topped with Prosciutto. It was incredible, the restaurant was accommodating, and Ed was on the ball.
Next we went to the Ancient Olive which we were allowed to sample some very artfully crafted Olive Oil, as well as a blueberry preserve cream cheese spread. It was incredible. We also sampled some stuffed olives and cured meats as well.
Next we ventured to Athenas where we were served flamed goat cheese and pita bread as well as a gyro with tzatiki sauce.
We then walked across a quaint park that had some historic obelisks and an old fashioned well, and made our way down to Vino Del Grotto. An excellent little winery that served us some of there special Hurricane Wine that they made from different fruit instead of from grapes. It was delicious and refreshing.
And for the finale we ventured into just one of the most beautiful hotels in the city. Casa Monica. The ambiance was spectacular, the staff friendly, and the restaurant(which was named Costa Brava) was amazing! We were served tapas, which was basically a buffet style appetizer bar. There was sauted and marinated onions, olives, stuffed peppers, prosciutto, genoa salami, and much, MUCH more. It was easily one of the most incredible experiences of my life. Ed was a fantastic tour guide, our whole party left happy, and full of not only delicious Mediterranean cuisine but also full of knowledge about the most beautiful city I have ever seen.

Tip: You'll be walking a lot so wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather. It's not really a meal but after 5 ex-large appetizer size food stops I wasn't hungry for dinner!

"A "Bonding" Tour as Ed Puts It"
TripAdvisor user rating 5 out of 5
Reviewed October 27, 2017 NEW
Ed, our tour guide, is highly recommended! He teaches at the Flagler College and knows his subject comprising of fun facts to keep us entertain. The group of 8 people, we were able to learn and saw things we wouldn't know about had we were on our own. We highly recommend guests taking this tour after taking the trolley tour since the trolley acts as a general knowledge about the town. Food on the tour was plenty with 4-5 stops plus some shopping opportunities. My fave are the Alcazar/Lightner Museum dinning hall, which used to be a swimming pool and the Ancient Olive for its fancy delicious olive oil, variety of flavoured balsamico and delicious honey. If I had more time, I'd explore the shop on my own later but we had to leave town that day. My husband likes the American Legion (crab cake) and Amistad Fair Trade shop with free 3 tasting wine—white, red, and sweet. The shop carries interesting crafty products from the 3rd world. The other eateries were a Cuban sandwich shop and a Greek restaurant. The latter, we left early to catch our flight, Ed asked the staff to prepare baklavas and gyros for us to take on our plane ride. How thoughtful is that! Thank you, Ed. And the guests were all nice and easy to "bond" with.

"a great tour even on a rainy day"

i went again today for my fourth time with 2 friends. it was raining but it didn't dampen our spirits. we sloshed through the puddles and pushed on for another great experience. our guide kathleen was a gracious host and we got to enjoy some my favorites and 2 restaurants that were new to me. the guide can either make or break a tour and kathleen proved to be outstanding. the rain soaked us all. the puddles made me happy that i wore sandals but we finished the tour with chocolate and ice cream at claude's chocolate. thanks to kathleen and to all of our hosts at the restaurants and shops that we visited. i must add a disclaimer to this review. it was submitted by sue k's husband randy.
