"The savory food tour"
August, 2016
Going into this tour, I had no idea what to expect. I figured we would get a few morsels of food, and listen to a tour guide run through a script of things to say. However, what we got was way, WAY, more.
First, we get to the meeting spot for the beginning of the tour, check in, and give the receptionist our names(Real or fake) and then we are given complimentary wine and chocolate! Not much of a wine guy, but it was pretty good. Then we waited for the rest of our tour group to get there(one of which was kind of upset about the parking situation, but lets get into that) and once all 8 of us arrived we met Ed and the adventure began.
We set out, heading right down the street towards the Cafe Alcazar, learning a bunch of great and interesting history about the city and buildings from Ed. Once we got to the restaurant, we got to sit at our table instantly and was given some more complimentary wine(I think it was wine, Ed said it was Absinthe or something like that) which was incredible! Then we were given a delicious artisan pizza to sample and to my disgust at first, Escargot. I had never tried it, and never had an intention to try it however after some encouraging I bit the bullet and popped it into my mouth. It was not bad, but it will be something I never try again.
So we set out right across the street to the Old City House Inn and Restaurant for a fantastic looking Goat cheese and Herb grit, with some shrimp in a sauce(sorry, I cannot recall all of what Ed said was in it). I say it looked good because I could not eat it due to a food allergy. Not to be left out, Ed sprang into action and got the chef to whip me up a fantastic cabbage salad topped with Prosciutto. It was incredible, the restaurant was accommodating, and Ed was on the ball.
Next we went to the Ancient Olive which we were allowed to sample some very artfully crafted Olive Oil, as well as a blueberry preserve cream cheese spread. It was incredible. We also sampled some stuffed olives and cured meats as well.
Next we ventured to Athenas where we were served flamed goat cheese and pita bread as well as a gyro with tzatiki sauce.
We then walked across a quaint park that had some historic obelisks and an old fashioned well, and made our way down to Vino Del Grotto. An excellent little winery that served us some of there special Hurricane Wine that they made from different fruit instead of from grapes. It was delicious and refreshing.
And for the finale we ventured into just one of the most beautiful hotels in the city. Casa Monica. The ambiance was spectacular, the staff friendly, and the restaurant(which was named Costa Brava) was amazing! We were served tapas, which was basically a buffet style appetizer bar. There was sauted and marinated onions, olives, stuffed peppers, prosciutto, genoa salami, and much, MUCH more. It was easily one of the most incredible experiences of my life. Ed was a fantastic tour guide, our whole party left happy, and full of not only delicious Mediterranean cuisine but also full of knowledge about the most beautiful city I have ever seen.

This was a great tour! Our tour guide, Ed, was knowledgeable, fun, answered questions and did a great job with the group. The food was great - very eclectic - and the history that went along with it was fabulous!!

Tip: You'll be walking a lot so wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather. It's not really a meal but after 5 ex-large appetizer size food stops I wasn't hungry for dinner!

"We ate good food but this was not a tour"

The good news is the food was all excellent. The bad news is there was nothing but walking into a restaurant, sitting down and eating. Kathleen started off well, giving us some background on the city and telling us the history of the first stop. But then she never told us anything else. I did not even know the name of the second stop, much less why we were there. We didn't know what we'd be eating until it was put in front of us. More bad news - we waited a long time to be served in 2 of the locations. I still don't understand why we went to a Legion and a Greek Restaurant. The tour ended on a high point at a local chocolate shop where the clerk gave us a full history on the shop and the chocolate. I would not recommend this tour - I've taken others in St Augustine that were better.

Thank you Ed. We had a delightful afternoon, eating in places we would have never found ourselves. Café Alcazar was a 10 on the wow scale; thanks for showing this piece of history and a little bit if travel magic happened when we found out that there was an exhibition of Downton Abbey right there in the Lightner Museum, where café Alcazar is. The wine pairings were excellent. Ed is very knowledgeable and fun to be around. Highly recommend this tour; you will not be sorry.

Kathleen was a "10" as a guide! We went to 4 restaurants, an oil/ vinegar bar, and chocolate shop. We were a group of 5 (party of 3 and 2) and the 5 of us got along quite nicely and even met briefly the next day. The restaurant choices were close together so the walking distance was not difficult and would not be for someone with modest/ moderate mobility. While the plates presented were not as large as I thought they would be, I was definitely full upon the conclusion of the 4 tastings. Pluses: Food variety and quality. We bought the wine package and it was very good at 3 of the 4 places (Wine at The Athena not so!) And of course, Kathleen! The server at the Gaufre's restaurant was adorable and amazing. Terrific service. Negatives: The server at the VFW acted rushed and put out with us. The Athena needs to choose a different wine! Leave off the last two stops. First- everyone was full (I could not even drink the hot chocolate provided beyond a couple of sips.) and it was simply a set up to make a purchase. Unnecessary.

Went on this yesterday with 3 friends, we were all very happy with the food, the excellent tour guide Ed and the experience. The only thing that was a bit off putting was the Greek/Polish place that served us dessert on a paper plate with a flimsy plastic fork.
